IU, Ju Ji Hoon, among winners at the 4th Blue Dragon Series Awards
Hunter with a Scalpel has released a written interview with director Lee Jung Hoon ahead of its June 16 premiere.
Hunter with a Scalpel tells the story of a genius forensic doctor, Se Hyeon (Park Ju Hyun), who, while performing an autopsy, discovers evidence linking her father Jo Gyun (Park Yong Woo) — believed to have died 20 years ago — to a murder case, and sets out to catch him before the police do.
Director Lee explained what drew him to the project: "When I read the script, I felt it was exceptionally immersive." "Rather than the confrontation between a psychopath and a sociopath, what struck me most was the fear that comes from the relationship between a father and daughter."
He added, "I tried to infuse the visuals with a heavy, visceral sensation so that viewers could fully feel Se Hyeon's psychological pressure." "We heightened immersion by incorporating visual elements that trigger the senses of touch and hearing — such as blood, mud, and fogged-up windows."
He also raised anticipation for the cast's passionate performances. Regarding Park Ju Hyun's character, he said, "She is the core axis of the story, so we meticulously explored her emotional trajectory, and that was truly meaningful."
Commenting about Park Yong Woo, he said, "His chilling expression in Decision to Leave left a strong impression," adding, "He appears gentle on the outside, but the fleetingly cold expressions he reveals align perfectly with the character persona."
Talking about Kang Hoon, he noted, "He has both the warm gaze often seen in melodramas and a sharpness, which makes him stand out in investigation scenes."
Director Lee also shared, "An ad-lib suggested by Kang Hoon briefly but effectively reveals the personality of his character, Jung Hyun."
Adding, he explained his directorial intent: "I deliberately included scenes where characters look straight at the camera, so that viewers could feel their fear and emotions more deeply."
In conclusion, he stated, "Hunter with a Scalpel is a work that delves into an intense psychological battle within the relationship between a father and daughter," and added, "I hope viewers will experience the tension and emotional depth through Se Hyeon's perspective."
Hunter with a Scalpel is coming June 16 on Disney+ in select regions.
