Park Bo Young shares the differences and similarities between her characters in 'Our Unwritten Seoul

Park Bo Young reveals how she prepared to play four roles in Our Unwritten Seoul.

Our Unwritten Seoul is a coming-of-age story of twin sisters Yoo Mi Ji and Yoo Mi Rae (both played by Park Bo Young) who look the same but are opposite in every other way, switching identities in pursuit of the lives they want to live.

Playing four roles — Yoo Mi Ji and Yoo Mi Rae, and Yoo Mi Rae impersonating Yoo Mi Ji and Yoo Mi Ji impersonating Yoo Mi Rae — Park Bo Young promises a character transformation never seen before. 

The actress recalled the moment she first read the script, saying, "I thought that the story of Mi Ji and Mi Rae was special, and [this might be] perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime experience in my acting career, and a huge opportunity as well."

Park Bo Young shared she was especially touched by the twins' promise to each other — "I'll live as you, and you live as me". "I was curious to see what would happen next. I liked [the aspect of] how the characters would grow, especially the way they face their pain and shortcomings."

She continued, "I believe writer Lee Kang's script has the power to move people's hearts. I was deeply drawn to that aspect." 

Talking about the charms of the twin sisters, Yoo Mi Ji and Yoo Mi Rae, she said, "Both Yoo Mi Ji and Yoo Mi Rae share this trait of hiding their own shortcomings or flaws, but Mi Ji has a way of sincerely caring for those around her, which gives her the charm that lets people eventually open their hearts. Mi Rae has the charm of always doing her best in her place and quietly, steadily moving forward with dedication."

Differentiating between the two seemingly similar yet different characters, Park Bo Young explained, "Mi Ji is somewhat playful, while Mi Rae is calm. That's the most noticeable difference on the surface. Though they pretend to be each other, there's this setup where one of them struggles to imitate the other, and this concept was developed through discussions with the director."

Concluding, the actress left viewers with a riddle, saying, "Watch closely to see whether I'm Mi Rae or Mi Ji." She added, "These twin sisters, who believed they knew each other better than anyone, decide to swap lives to shoulder each other's pain. But in doing so, they end up confronting their own pain, like looking into a mirror, and grow [through that experience]. I hope you'll follow their journey of growth."

Our Unwritten Seoul premieres on May 24. The K-drama will be available on Netflix.
