"My father always tells me, 'Live your life with the mindset that life is like a wave.' What he means is that just as waves rise and fall, life too goes up and down. So something bad isn't necessarily bad, and something good isn't necessarily good. It's something I find myself repeating often these days." — Park Jin Young.
On June 1, idol and actor Park Jin Young sat for an interview to mark the conclusion of Our Unwritten Seoul. Expressing his excitement, Park Jin Young said, "Thanks to this drama, quite a few people have started to recognize me as 'actor Park Jin Young [rather than idol Park Jin Young],' which I'm grateful for and happy about. But I'm trying to stay as calm as possible." He continued, "I tend to avoid looking up responses, especially when a show is getting good reviews, because I feel like I might get carried away without realizing it. This time as well, I'm deliberately avoiding looking at too many reviews."
Our Unwritten Seoul concluded with a personal best viewership rating of 8.4%. The K-drama portrayed the journey of twin sisters — identical in appearance but opposite in every other way — who switch lives and, in doing so, come to discover the true meaning of life.
Park Jin Young played Lee Ho Su, a lawyer who is the twin sisters' neighbor and also their high school classmate. Park Jin Young said, "The reason I wanted to play Ho Su was clear," explaining, "Because of his hearing impairment, Ho Su hears only about half of what others hear — but he tries all the harder to really listen." He went on to emphasize, "Ho Su reminds us that in order to truly listen to someone, you have to listen with your heart. I tried to bring that aspect of Ho Su to life by expressing it with my own nuances."
"When I first received the script, I thought, 'There are a lot of lines, so why does the character feel so silent?'". "As I thought about it, I realized that Ho Su probably speaks slowly. Since he puts so much effort to listen well, I felt he'd also articulate his words clearly and speak slowly. And because he's cautious when he speaks, I imagined he'd be about half a beat slower — and I tried to reflect that detail in my performance."
Our Unwritten Seoul was also the actor's first drama filmed after his military service. Park confessed, "Coming back after a two-year break and being given such an amazing story and a challenging character, I honestly felt an enormous amount of pressure."
Park Jin Young shared that among the lines from Our Unwritten Seoul, there was one he especially wished he could have said to his younger self. He pulled out his phone and opened the notes app, where he had written down several lines from the drama.
"There's a line where Kim Ro Sa says to Hyun Sang Wol, her friend from the orphanage, 'Even if it takes time, there will be people who truly understand you.'"
He continued, "Everyone goes through a period when they feel lost when they're young, and I, too, had a phase in the early to mid-years of my debut when I felt anxious, as if I was taking on all the trials of the world. I noted that line down because I thought it would've brought a lot of solace to the me of that time."
"I think the times when I felt the most depressed were when I really felt I was completely alone. I want to share this line with anyone who might be going through a time like that."
Since completing his military service, Park Jin Young has been coming on both big and small screens. But, rather than taking a breather, he is preparing for his next project. "These days, I'm calmly going about my daily tasks, doing what I need to do." He added, "I plan to stay consistent with self-care, exercise, and mental discipline, and do my best to prepare well for the next project."
Concluding, he said, "I'm truly overwhelmed with gratitude for all the love this project has received. But while I'm thankful, I also know that I need to do well in the next project to keep getting this kind of response. So I keep trying to be humble and not get too excited. Still, when I do hear about the positive reviews now and then… I can't help but feel very happy (laughs)."
