Kim Shin Rok shares her thoughts following Tastefully Yours successfully wrapping its run.
Tastefully Yours follows Han Beom Woo (Kang Ha Neul), a conglomerate heir who aims to inherit Korea's top food company, and Mo Yeon Joo (Go Min Si), a stubborn chef running a one-table restaurant without a signboard in Jeonju.
Kim Shin Rok shared her thoughts on the K-drama through her agency, Just Entertainment. Here is an excerpt of her Q&A.
Please share a few words on the conclusion of Tastefully Yours.
I feel quite sad to part ways with the characters and stories I loved. I hope it was a warm and comforting time for everyone who watched.
How did you come to join Tastefully Yours?
I received the script up to episode 4 from the production company, and it was so much fun. Director Park Dhan Hee said he wanted to portray the lovely side of the actress Kim Shin Rok, and I was swayed by that and decided to join. The character was originally written to be in her 50s, but he adjusted it to her 40s for me.
You played two very contrasting characters in Undercover High School and Tastefully Yours, and we heard the filming periods even overlapped. Was it difficult? Also, what were the key points of each character from your perspective?
Surprisingly, filming two completely opposite characters at the same time created a kind of synergy. Like the balance of sweet and salty, moving back and forth between Seo Myeong Ju's tension and Jin Myeong Suk's liveliness allowed me to film without getting exhausted or being cliché. Each character served as a breathing space for the other.
Did you have any subtext in mind for Myeong Suk?
I believe that every being has desire. For me as an actor, not only people but also objects, animals, and plants each have their own desires, and I believe drama emerges from the process of those desires becoming entangled. Even if Myeong Suk's growth arc isn't strongly highlighted in the script structure, I tried not to forget that Jin Myeong Suk is also a precious person for whom her own life is the most important.
Myeong Suk's "fan girl" side in the drama also left an impression. Is there anything you fangirl over?
In real life, I'm somewhat of a "fan girl" too. There are so many fun dramas these days that I'm quite busy keeping up with them all. I'm especially looking forward to Salon de Holmes, ENA's Monday-Tuesday drama that will air after Tastefully Yours. Just the tagline — "Apartment Villain Hunters! The Four Problem Solvers" — makes me want to watch it right away.
Do you have a favorite scene or line from Tastefully Yours?
I really enjoyed filming the food truck event in episode 4. We rented the lawn in front of Jeonju City Hall for about a week, and the weather was great. I remember filming with excitement alongside the actors and staff who were just starting to get close to each other. Even when watching it on TV, the scene of us busily running the business outdoors felt heartwarming and nice.
Lastly, please share a few words for the viewers who stayed with the drama until the end, and tell us about your upcoming plans.
First, I'll be performing in a play from the end of August to early November. I'm looking forward to the time I'll spend in the rehearsal room over the next two months. Whether it's in this play, or in future films or dramas, I hope to greet you again with a new and fearless side of myself. I wish everyone good health and happiness.
