The production team of Perfect Crown has apologized amid controversy over historical distortion.

The MBC Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown recently became embroiled in controversy over historical distortion.

Korean netizens took issue with the content of episode 11, which aired on May 15. In that episode, Grand Prince Yi An (Byeon Woo Seok) ascends the throne with the help of Seong Hee Joo (IU) and holds his coronation ceremony, during which the officials chant "Cheonse".

Netizens argued that using "Cheonse" (千歲) instead of "Manse" (萬歲), which is reserved for an emperor, toward Yi An amounted to reducing the country's status to that of a subordinate or tributary state.

Another point of controversy was the "Guryu Myeongwan" worn by Grand Prince Yi An during the coronation ceremony. Netizens pointed out that the "Guryu Myeongwan" is headwear worn by kings of tributary states and argued that if the nation were an independent sovereign state, he should have worn the "Sibriyu Myeongwan" instead.

As the controversy grew, the production team posted an apology on the drama's official homepage under the comments section.

Below is the full statement from the production team of Perfect Crown:

Hello, this is the production team of Perfect Crown. We sincerely bow our heads in apology to the many people who watched the drama with affection for causing concern due to issues related to the world-building setting and historical accuracy.

The production team has taken viewers' criticism very seriously that the scene of the king's coronation ceremony, where the king wore a "Guryu Myeongwan", and the officials shouted "Cheonse", undermined the nation's sovereign status.

This issue arose because the production team failed to carefully examine how Joseon-era [ceremonial] customs evolved throughout history. Perfect Crow is not only a romance drama but also a drama having the characteristics of a historical [work], and greater caution and deeper consideration should have been given to the areas where its fictional world intersects with real historical context. However, the production team fell short in refining the world-building in a more detailed manner and in reviewing it more thoroughly.

We humbly accept viewers' criticism, and we will revise the audio and subtitles for the relevant scenes as quickly as possible in future rebroadcasts, as well as VOD and OTT services. We once again deeply apologize for causing discomfort to viewers.

Going forward, our production team will do its utmost, with an even greater sense of responsibility, to produce works that live up to the viewers' trust.
