Won Jin A comments on playing a tough character weathered by wounds in 'The Defects'

Won Jin A opens up about her role in the upcoming K-drama The Defects.

The Defects follows the desperate survival struggle and revenge of children who were abandoned by their foster parents and narrowly survived the brink of death.

In the K-drama, Won Jin A takes on the role of Kim Ah Hyun, who was adopted and then "refunded". She becomes the leader of the surviving children and a pillar of support for them in their revenge and survival.

The actress shared her reasons for choosing the project and her thoughts on taking on the role of Kim Ah Hyun: "What drew me to the story was how the children in it aren't chasing some grand reward or goal, but are instead searching for hope in life as human beings. That was very compelling." She added, "I've always dreamed of playing an action role, and I'm grateful to be part of such a great project with such wonderful actors. It makes this experience all the more meaningful."

Talking about her character Kim Ah Hyun, Won Jin A said, "Ah Hyun is a strong character who was abandoned by her parents as a child and now risks her life for a free life with her siblings, who became her family [after going through the same pain]."

"Since this is my first time doing action, it was important to not only build the character but also to match the action choreography of the action scenes. Sweating it out with my co-stars, trusting one another, and performing together became a truly special experience."

Won Jin A chose "responsible", "perseverant", and "brave" as the three keywords that best represent her character. "I saw her sense of responsibility in the way she feels she must protect her younger siblings, her perseverance in never giving up no matter how difficult the situation, and her bravery in her determination to track down her enemies to the very end, no matter how powerful or terrifying they may be."

The actress also commented about her co-stars: "It was so good. We quickly became close, and it felt as if we had known each other for a long time, and we were always by each other's side on set." "Especially Yeom Jung Ah sunbae was like a dependable older sister — she looked after me, always showed concern, and treated us to lots of delicious food. Aside from the moments we were acting, the set was always full of laughter. I think it's going to stay with me for a long time."

Concluding, Won Jin A said, "I'm looking forward to [the drama] not only for myself but also for the other actors, as I believe we'll be showing sides of ourselves that viewers haven't seen before." 

The Defects is coming on July 21. News about the K-drama's global OTT is yet to come.
